Parents, students and teachers are seeing the many benefits of learning an orchestral instrument as part of Trinity Catholic College’s comprehensive music education program, Amadeus.

“The Amadeus Music Program is an amazing opportunity for all students to develop a love of music and benefit from developing music skills that will assist them to thrive as learners at Trinity Catholic College,” said Principal Daniel Delmage.

Introduced in our school in Term 1, 2021, Amadeus enables access and equity to music education for all students, regardless of abilities and music backgrounds, and is underpinned by research that proves that learning an instrument and playing in a musical ensemble strengthens neural pathways in the brain and can significantly improve academic success and student engagement.

The Amadeus program provides students in Year 7 to 8 with classroom music lessons, ensemble lessons and small group tuition led by school classroom music teachers and specialist music tutors. Students also receive an orchestral instrument to take home and practise.

“Excitingly, we have 220 students participating in the Amadeus Music Education Program,” Principal Delmage said.

Students are learning how to play string instruments (violin, viola and cello), woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet and bassoon) and brass instruments (trumpet, horn and trombone).

Music road ahead

Sydney Catholic Schools’ Amadeus Music Education Program is one of the biggest, most comprehensive and ambitious investments in quality music education ever undertaken in Sydney’s schools.

Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, Tony Farley, said the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Opera Australia and Sydney Youth Orchestras were among the program’s avid supporters.

“Amadeus is a great example of how we, at Sydney Catholic Schools, are applying the scale and collaboration of our educational network to deliver innovative educational programs and new models of learning,” Mr Farley said.
